He turned my mourning into dancing

Here is the lyrics to a kids’ song that many of us know, but only turned up 6 hits in Google. Hopefully this will be the 7th result.

He turned my mourning into dancing
He turned my sorrow into joy
A song of praise instead of sadness
and for my grief the oil of joy (x2)

That we might be trees of righteousness
The planting of the Lord
That he might be glorified (x2)

Does anyone know where this song originated from?

  3. Heard it sung years ago by Christians of Aboriginal and Island descent living in Gordonvale Qld. Have never seen printed music. Surely someone must have written it up at some time.

  4. The original composer is Charlie Mathews from New Zealand. He passed away in October 2013. He was a kind and loving person, with a powerful music talent from God. His song was also performed by a gospel musician of Papua New Guinea, Mr Sikal Kelep.

  12. Kia Ora ,

This was one of many songs my older Brother Charlie wrote, God gave him this amazing gift to the body of Christ.
His children and grand children have picked up the anointing, don’t be surprised that in the near future you will hear more of Charlie’s songs been sung & released by his musical & gifted Whanau.

  13. This is my go-to- song whenever I feel assailed by the negative lying thoughts of the enemy. I learned it in Berlin,East Germany in the Elim Gemeinde Stadt-Mitte.
I never forgot it. It changes the radio channel of the mind when under warfare.
I desired to learn its original English version (i strongly suspected that it hadn’t originated in German speaking countries) and the Lord helped me to find this here after typing the entire German lyrics into goolge search. I want to teach it to my daughter whose first language unfortunately is English and am so glad i found it. It is SCRIPTURE,which is most powerful in defeating the enemy. Jesus wasn’t singing hillsong songs to overcome the enemy in the desert (i have nothing against hillsong by the way) and the melody is joy inducing. There are few songs you can sing over and over and never get tired. This is one of them.

  20. This beautiful song. I grew up as a child in Papua New Guinea, singing this song. Today I am an adult and just laying in bed dealing with anxiety, this song just reappeared in my mind of its own accord, refusing to stop. Thank you so much for writing out the lyrics, thank you everyone for your comments and stories, I am blessed to know more about the story of this song and how God is using it all over the world to comfort us and battle the enemy ❤️ our God is Good!

  22. Hello, yes this song that my eldest brother Charlie Mathews wrote was one of many that he produced out of his love relationship with Jesus. Music was always apart of his life & our family. Charlie along with our cousin’s Danny & Dave Hiahkita & the rest of their band were all converted to passionate followers of Jesus while playing gigs in clubs & pubs in the mid 70’s down in Dunedin South Island New Zealand & other parts of NZ. Charlie had a prophetic word spoken over his life & music, that The Lord would take his songs around the World. Charlie never got to travel around the World personally, BUT his music did. One such song that he wrote “ Extol The Name of him who Rides the Heavens” .. He is our God, that was credited to have been a theem song sung at a Billy Graham Crusade meeting in Europe. Peal of Great Price was his recording label or though many of his songs were author unknown or were produced by Integrity Music & Hossana Music. Charlie learnt to ask God for New Songs, I remember him tell us, the lord spoke to him saying Charlie I’ve got lots of songs in Heaven BUT no one is asking me for them. Hence Charlie began to ask James 4:2-3. Almost all of his songs came out of scripture, they exalted Jesus & were easy for the whole Church to sing. I remember leading worship with him on guitar at my brother Ps Len’s tangi funeral he starting getting a download from the Spirit within 2-3 mins the whole gathering we sing this new song the lord had just given to Charlie in the middle of a tangi, such was his sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. On one other occasion at our School of revival in 2012 on top of a 100 acre property on a mountain in Brisbane Upper Brookefield Charlie was teaching on True Worship not entertainment. In the middle of lectures, informal times of prayer worship & praise Charlie began to get a new songs, after the second time I started to pick up on the zibe the song & I would begin to record this on my phone. After the meeting Charlie would say Joe did you get that did you get that song. Many time it was just a few lines, that was all Charlie needed, he would then be on his guitar & lap top & within what seemed like minutes he would have produced a new song. The next day or evening he would be teaching that song to us all in the school. During that 4 weeks of Revival school charlie RECIEVED eleven songs through the Holy Spirit. I miss my big brother, the legacy he has pasted on to his Children & Grandchildren who are in turn have a powerful anointing to write songs & lead in worshipping JESUS. Arohanui ❤️☝
